A Line-Storm Song By: Robert Frost
The line-storm clouds fly tattered and swift.
The road is forlorn all day,
Where a myriad snowy quartz stones lift,
And the hoof-prints vanish away.
The roadside flowers, too wet for the bee,
Expend their bloom in vain.
Come over the hills and far with me,
And be my love in the rain.
The birds have less to say for themselves
In the wood-world's torn despair
Than now these numberless years the elves,
Although they are no less there:
All song of the woods is crushed like some
Wild, earily shattered rose.
Come, be my love in the wet woods, come,
Where the boughs rain when it blows.
There is the gale to urge behind
And bruit our singing down,
And the shallow waters aflutter with wind
From which to gather your gown.
What matter if we go clear to the west,
And come not through dry-shod?
For wilding brooch shall wet your breast
The rain-fresh goldenrod.
Oh, never this whelming east wind swells
But it seems like the sea's return
To the ancient lands where it left the shells
Before the age of the fern;
And it seems like the time when after doubt
Our love came back amain.
Oh, come forth into the storm and rout
And be my love in the rain.
Robert Frost has a great way of expressing weather. Weather is used a lot in this poem. Frost talks about how rain brings love, how storms swifts through the air, and how the rain feels like the sea. He also explains in "A Line-Storm" how flowers bloom after rain, and how wind makes sand linger gracefully. If you conclude on what was discussed, you will see that Robert Frost illustrates that the weather is depressing. This poem enhances my knowledge because it shows in a very fluent poetic way what weather does and how peaceful it can really be. When you think about storms and rain you think dull or dismal, but after reading this he is expressing that good things come from it. Specifically love.
This poem does give me further knowledge about weather because it explains what weather does. But, they aren’t the usual situations. We all know that wind blows messing up girls hair, or wind helps fly a kite. But what we don’t do is read between the lines. Wind can be gentle. It can swift sand two and fro from one side of the park to the other carrying along maple leaves or a family of ants. Wind can be fierce and even deadly, but it can also be calm, relaxing, and just what people need. This poem will not be possible if it didn’t include weather. Weather is the life of this poem. Weather is the life of animals and humans. Weather is the life of this planet.

WATER! MAGIC or TRAGIC?

The main resource that people use in this world is water. Water is used in households, in industries and in agriculture. But, where does all this water come from? Does it magically appear like a bunny in a hat? Does it come to us whenever we need it? DEFINITELY NOT! Water is a natural resource and makes up oceans, lakes, rivers, aquifers, and is stored in plants. All of the water from the reservoirs is then evaporated into the clouds, which then produce rain. The rain falls back into the reservoirs and the whole process takes place again. Because of the "rotation" of the process, it is called the water cycle. This means that this will happen again and again, one right after the other. But, once the cycle is complete, it finds something else to do. Humans take the water from the reservoir and use it to survive. They use it for drinks, food, hoses, toilets, showers, dishwashers, washing machines and sinks. Because all of this water is being used, it is being taken away from the environment. Humans, including me, need to start conserving water and be more cautious with how much they use. Many animals aren’t supplied with as much water because humans take it for granted. Humans also make the water unusable, or hard to deal with. Cars, planes, smoke and other factors pollute our air and oceans. In class, we made a mini replica or display of the cycles, reservoirs and humans. As time went on, we added in blue dye, which represented pollution. This replica really helped me understand how water works, and how humans have to be cautious of how much we use or waste.

ARCTIC TALES!!

There are many environments on the Earth. In the movie, Arctic Tales, Nanu the polar bear and Seela the walrus go through many difficult experiences in order to survive. The mothers, who have to protect and show them the ropes to survival, lead these two very cute animals. Where these animals live, it is very cold. But, because of the type of animals that they are, they are dependent on this cold air. If the ice around them melts, Nanu and Seela will be sent into the water. Being in the water too long can cause them to die. If soon or later one species dies off, then its predator will not inquire any food and they might die as well. The ice also provides homes for the animals. This way, they have somewhere safe to run off to if their predator is coming after them. One of the many shocking things that did happen in this movie was that the male polar bears need food so they attacked young polar bear cubs. I didn’t think that an animal, especially from the same species, would ever do such a thing. I believe that the main reason why this movie was created was because of humans polluting the air around us. In the arctic, ice is melting keeping animals from food. In our world, our air from cars is being polluted, and our recycling has gone down the drain. So if we want to make sure that those poor animals get food and are able to survive, this whole planet needs to do something to fix it- NOW!

CELL PHONES!! WE NEED THEM (social studies)
Over the years, many types of technology have changed. You can from the DVD players, to the tracking devices injected into animals. But, one of the most important devices is a cell phone. You can be stuck in traffic and need to get somewhere. You can be lost on the way to a soccer game and find your way by calling someone on the team. Some teenagers need their privacy, and cell phones give it to them. They can have conversations with their friends, in a text message or phone call, without their family intruding. The most significant idea that I think helps this world today is that cell phones are there in case of an emergency. If your mom gets into a car accident or fender bender, and she was supposed to come pick you up from tennis, then it would be helpful if she could call you to tell you that you need to find a ride home. If you accidentally forgot something at school, but realized it on the bus ride to school, it would be helpful to call home to see if a family member could bring it to school. Some people think cell phones aren’t necessary when in actuality they are your connection between others. They help a culture communicate with one another, keeping that culture closer in relation. I know, if I didn’t have a cell phone, many emergencies wouldn’t have been taken care of.

Math Extra Credit 2

Who: Tested in kids who range from kindergarten to 6th grade. Proven by the University of Chicago.
What: It is a new method called spiraling. This is when the teacher spends a few days on one topic, and then moves onto another. This method is called every day math. It helps the students contain the information from the "Everyday Math" program.
Where: Discovered by the University of CHICAGO.
When: posted: March 9, 2008. Taken place now in the world.
Why: This program is for the students to learn the same subject over and over and over again. It helps them memorize that certain "formula" better than usually. The school districts also want to keep the learning of academics consistent.
How: It is a change that took time and effort made in certain school districts.
My Opinion: I think this a good idea because when a class does repeat and practice things numerous times, it is much easier and you can be prepared for tests more easily. I don’t agree though because there are going to be fewer skills learned because of the course of one. So while before the "Everyday Math" program, 16 skills could have be learned, while after maybe only 10 were learned. Math is important and not everyone realizes they use it every day!

MATH EXTRA CREDIT!!!

Who: Professor Darren Crowdy from Imperial College in London.
What: A math problem that had stumped many scientists for over 140 years has finally been solved. It is a theoretical tool used by mathematicians, engineers and scientists to translate information from difficult shapes to a simpler circular shape so that it is easier to analyze.
Where: This is probably taking place in London.
When: March 4th, 2008. (I’m guessing when this was posted)
Why: To help mathematicians analyze maps easily and more efficiently.
How: The formula that had tried to be used in the mid 19 century was called the Schwarz-Christoffel formula. This formula had many problems in it and it didn’t work for shapes that had any holes or irregularities. So, professor Crowdy made some adjustments and found a solution!
My Opinion: I think that this is very cool that after 140 years, a professor was able to figure out the problem to the formula. Many people will have the brains to figure it out, but not the determination. I know that I would get very frustrated if I ever tried to succeed with this, but I’m glad that someone did succeed. He overcame the obstacles and was able to conclude the formula. He himself and many other are probably very proud and excited, and they were probably very supported towards this goal!
